INSTRUCTOR EXPERIENCE:
My name is Mike. I’ve been teaching Permit to Carry classes for five years through BETTER DEFENSE. I served in the U.S. Army as an M-1 Abrams Armor Crewman (19K) and again in the Light Infantry (11B). I’ve been in Law Enforcement for over nine years and work as a Field Training Officer, and instructor in Use of Force, Taser, Baton, and Security Threat Groups. Through the NRA I am an instructor in First Steps / Pistol Basics and Personal Protection in the Home.
Our course meets the requirements of Mn. Statue: M.S.624.717 2 (b) and includes:
Firearm safety, situational awareness, conflict avoidance, physiological effects of stress, legal aspects of concealed carry, restrictions on the use of deadly force, criminal and civil issues on the use of deadly force, and shooting qualifications.
The Permit-to-Carry class will generally run about 6 hours including range time. The range portion of the class consists of 50 rounds of a suitable carry handgun. Your target will be a man-sized ‘’photo’’ target positioned 21’ away. If conditions allow, it will include a ‘’night shoot’’.
- You will need to bring a valid state issued Drivers License or Identification Card.
- If you have hearing and eye protection, bring it. If you do not, I have some you can use or you can rent them at the range.
- You will need 50 rounds of ammunition. In door ranges do not generally allow aluminum cased ammunition. (It’s hard to separate from the brass cases since it cant’ be picked out with a magnet like steel cases can be).
- You are expected to be versed in gun safety and to be able to completely operate your handgun before the carry class. I do offer Basic Firearms Training courses if needed.
